The Canadian Hunting Market

More Canadian men fish or hunt than participate in golf, hockey, baseball, jogging or skiing. Canadian history is steeped in the culture of fishing and hunting. No longer a means of survival, fishing and hunting have evolved into modern recreational activities with millions of participants driving millions of dollars in equipment, apparel and travel.

Nearly 1.4 million Canadians participate in hunting, and 28% of them live in Ontario. Participation in Canada has grown 10.5% in the past three years. Canadian hunters spend an estimated $392 million each year on hunting equipment.

The target market for this show is qualified hunters with both the means and interest to hunt in Africa. In terms of geographical focus, marketing efforts are being concentrated on the province of Ontario, Quebec, and neighbouring American cities such as Buffalo in New York State, Vermont and Michigan. There is a large, untapped market in Canada. Canadian hunters are passionate about their sport, but have had little exposure to the African hunting opportunities and its affordability.

Total resident hunters in Canada

Ontario: 377,000 28%
Quebec: 328,000 25%

Alberta: 192,000 14%

Exhibitor Comments

Just wanted to shoot you a quick email to say thank you for all of your efforts surrounding this year's African Hunting Showcase in Toronto! David and I really enjoyed being a part of the exhibits on Omalanga Safari's behalf. It was really wonderful to see all of the exhibiters again this year...what a great group of people!

I know this event requires a lot of time and hard work on your part...thank you for all of your efforts!

David and Heather Olszowka – Omalanga Safaris, Namibia

Just a quick email as I am now back in my office again to say many thanks for your help putting the show together, I personally thought it was great and definitely would like to attend next year and possibly the Atlanta and Calgary shows as well.

I took one cheque at the show and have had 7 or 8 decent enquiries since then.
Many thanks

Grant Taylor – Mashambanzou Safaris, Mozambique

Dear Birgit ,

As I promised you I would keep you informed about the Canadian hunters that have booked with us resulting from the Toronto show. About three weeks ago Dave Brodhagen, the one taxidermist that also exhibited in Toronto, visited us with his hunting buddy Dave Walden.

Right at this moment Michael Stark is hunting with us. He is a very polite and interesting client to have in camp

Next week a hunter with the name of Darcy Webb will visit Westfalenhof and
Cowdray- so we are indeed satisfied that the business with the Canadian hunters is gaining momentum!

Sincere regards from the fringes of the Kalahari,

Rainer Ling - Die Keiler – Namibia

Dear Birgit,

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed the Toronto show and felt very well looked after! You are doing a good job there! I liked the personal set up.

In general I was very busy talking to clients at my table. I had the impression most clients took the chance to talk to every outfitter in the room that offered what they were interested in, so that’s a good thing about the show too.

I will let you know if any Canadian turns up with a booking in the future!

See you in Toronto next year!
Looking forward to it.

Kind regards Julika – Makadi Safaris - Namibia
